In the Global Academy of Coaching, we apply the ‘3 seconds rule’, a valuable and tested tool for upgrading communication.
Every time my coachees finish their last sentence, I count to three before I reply. It’s incredible how much difference you can see and how appreciated the coachee feels in this silence. This silence gives them space to integrate and understand what they’ve just said.
So before giving in to anger or hatred feelings after a conversation, take a deep breath and count to three. And then talk. You’ll be surprised how you’ll save yourself from a lot of unneeded dispute with this simple but powerful technique.
